Japanese people love fresh sea urchin! Hakodate port is known as the place to eat the best, freshest sea urchin in Japan. In this article, we will introduce the places we proudly recommend for it!

A Must Visit “Unidon” Place If You Are in Hakodate, Hokkaido

The northern part of Japan, Hokkaido, is known for its abundance of great food. Especially Hakodate, a port town of Hokkaido, is said to have the best seafood in the area.

In Hakodate, you can eat various kinds of seafood such as squids, crab, scallops, uni (sea urchin) and so on. The most popular seafood of all, however, is definitely uni (sea urchin). When it comes to uni, its freshness is more important than other seafood. The taste and flavor of the uni you can have in Hakodate is very different compared to what you can have in Tokyo and other cities.

Of course you can enjoy the delicious taste of uni as it is, but the most popular way to enjoy it is “unidon.” The combination of cold uni and warm rice creates a great harmoney, which is miraculously delicious. I’m even drooling as I write this article.

So, today we are going to introduce two important “unidon” restaurants you must visit if you are in Hakodate.

If you are looking for seafood, hit Ganso Hakodate Asaichi (in front of Hakodate Station) first

There are many seafood markets in Hakodte, but the most famous market is “Ganso Hakodate Asaichi,” which is 5 minute walk from the station. Some of the stores/restaurants are open from morning, so there are many tourists, who buy gifts at those stores and go eat breakfast and lunch.

On the other hand, many of them close by 2 in the afternoon because they only serve the freshest seafood. Be careful about the time.

Original Seafood Don Popular “Kikuyo Dining”

This restaurant is said to have created the image that Hakodate Asaichi is all about seafood-don. It has been popular for a long time and iis loved by the locals in Hakodate.

Their Uni Don is 3500 yen. Not only is the look gorgeous, but so is the price. (lol)

But it is worth it because their uni is so big that it covers the whole bowl. If you are a woman, you may want to try their small portion (3000yen). It is big enough to satisfy your appetite.

Also, in Kikuyo Dining, you can create your favorite combo of seafood. Each bowl comes with seaweed miso soup.

We decided to go with “Nishokudon” (two colored bowl) where you can choose two types of seafood. We chose uni and ikura (salmon roe). This is 2100 yen.

They also have “Yonshokudon” where you can choose four different types. If you choose uni, ikura, scallops, and crab, it is 1980 yen.

You can also choose scallops, shrimp, or salmon, so enjoy creating your favorite combination. Kikuyo Dining’s seafood bowls are all super fresh, so you can taste the natural sweetness of the fishe. It’s also an excellent value. Once we had seafood bowls here, it became hard for us to eat other places. It is that great.

Uni heaven! “Uni Murakami”

The next restaurant we are introducing is “Uni Murakami,” which specializes in uni. It is owned by an uni processing company, so you can eat nice and fresh, the real uni here. They became popular by word of mouth, and now it is not uncommon to wait in line for 1 to 2 hours.

This is the famous “Uni Don” (3500 yen). This thing is beyond your imagination. It is so delicious. You can clearly see the difference from typical uni from other restaurants.

However, their portions are smaller than you might expect, so if you are a man, maybe this won’t satisfy you. They have side menu with dishes like uni gratin and uni croquette, so it might be a good idea to order these too and be completely satisfied.

So how was it? Experience the pinnacle of luxurious uni in Hakodate, one of the best places to try it. The taste is guaranteed to be delicious and it is affordable too.
