Try Fukuoka’s Famous Strawberry Amaou in Sweets!
Hi folks! Our summer vacation in Kyushu is about to be over now…(tears)
We stopped by Hakata Komichi in Hakata Station where you can get souvenir. We looked around for sweets.
Selection 1: Amabi From Ina King
Ina King is selling sweets using Fukuoka’s super famous strawberry Amaou. We purchased Amabi which is jelly-like confection (generally called Warabimochi) made from bracken starch with strawberry flavour.
It was 1,620 yen for a box.
Amabi contains a lot of Amaou juice in it that makes it a little pricey.
They sold about 19,000 boxes in previous year.
Amabi has been introduced so many times on TV in Fukuoka with very high reputations, so it is popular to not only tourists but locals as well. I can’t wait to taste it!!
There is instruction of how you eat it.
Well, I have had Warabimochi, but this is my first time to eat Amabi, so it was helpful.
- Eat it by itself.
- Pour condensed milk over it.
- Sprinkle Kinako (roasted soy bean flour) over it.
...Okay, let’s try!
This is how it looked like.
It looks very traditional and
Look at this brilliant red coloured Amabi!
I have never seen Warabimochi like this.
Okay, I followed instruction...eat it by itself first.
Mmm… It had very rich taste of Amaou strawberry.
The texture was like, soft gummy candy.
My favourite was with condensed milk.
It tasted like eating fresh strawberry with condensed milk. Its flavour was that rich!
With Kinako was...okay... It was actually my least favourite. I wish I had it all with condensed milk...
1,620 yen is not cheap for sweets, but it is good as souvenir...I mean, this is something you can get only in Fukuoka!
Selection 2: Another Confection At Ina King -Strawberry Dorayaki
Ina King also sells Dorayaki with Amaou, which is called Doraking Ace.
Dorayaki is very popular Japanese traditional confection. It is basically pancakes sandwich sweet red bean paste. Dorayaki is Japanese famous Manga/Anime character Doraemon’s favourite.
Doraking Ace contains Amaou strawberry in it.
It is 390 yen for one.
…...Whaaaat? Well, it is not just strawberry, it is AMAOU strawberry...get it.
This is how it looked like.
This was much thicker than regular Dorayaki, it looked like potatoes.
Pancakes were very soft, but it was heavier than I thought.
I cut it half and here is inside.
It was filled with mostly strawberry mousse and a bit of sweet red bean paste.
...My mouth was full of joy!
Pancakes were very fluffy and chewy.
It was very different from any Dorayaki I have eaten before.
390 yen is expensive for a Dorayaki, but Doraking Ace is definitely worth it!
If you are not used to Warabimochi’s jelly like tecture sweets, Doraking Ace is better choice than Amabi. If you are hungry, just one Doraking Ace might not be enough!
Enjoy Amaou strawberry sweets at Ina King!
You will not regret visiting here to taste these unique and delicious sweets!!
