What is June like in Japan? Let’s turn a gloomy rainy season “Tsuyu (梅雨)“
June is the rainy season in most places in Japan and also it’s the month without national holidays. This is the reason why people call “June is the gloomiest month of the year”. But I believe that’s not really true. If you see things with different perspective, there’re beautiful sceneries you can only enjoy in June! The national holidays in June
Unfortunately there’re none. June is the only month without national holidays. Well, I presume we can’t complain about this as we have plenty in May (three national holidays, we call them Golden Week Holiday).
The weather in June (weather・temperature・clothing)
The weather in June is called “Tsuyu(梅雨)”, it’s mean a rainy season. The humidity level is very high and rains a lot. So, you need to prepare an umbrella and a raincoat. You might need a pair of rain boots too.
If you forget your rain goods, don’t worry. This season is perfect timing to shop rain goods as you can find plenty styles and designs at department stores. Don’t you think, it might be a good idea to get one for your souvenir!?
Festivals and events in June
1) Enjoy Hydrangea(あじさい) Garden at Hasedera(長谷寺) in Kamakura(鎌倉)
In Japan, Hydrangea (紫陽花) only blooms during the rainy season in June. When you see them start blooming you’ll feel the rainy season（Tsuyu梅雨) is almost there.
One of the famous places where you can enjoy Hydrangea is “Hasedera Temple (長谷寺) ”. It’s about an hour trip by train from Tokyo,it’s the famous excursion sightseeing spots “Kamakura (鎌倉)”. Surprisingly, you can find 20000 trees of Hydrangea at this Hasedera Temple and they’ll tint the temple with blue, purple and pink!
2) Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival
Kanazawa Hayakumangoku Festival is held every June at Kanazawa city in Ishikawa prefecture.
This festival is the commemoration of Toshiie's (the federal lord Maeda Toshiie) entry into the castle in 1583. There’re many attractions such as Taiko performance (Japanese drums) and parades which re-enact the old days of Kanazawa to experience a traditional Japanese culture.
Toronagashi (the floating lit lanterns) is also very beautiful and fantastic.
3) Lavender field in Furano, Hokkaido
The winter in Hokkaido is very cold and long. Because of that, June is still a middle of spring and interestingly there’s no rainy season in Hokkaido. June is the time the flower blooms everywhere and it’s one of the beautiful seasons in the year.
This picture is from Furano in Hokkaido. It’s famous for lavender fields and June is in full bloom! I’m sure you’ll be fascinated by its scale and beauty.
4) Father’s day
It’s not a national holiday but third Sunday of June is “Father’s day”. You’ll find a lot of gifts for your farther: ties, handkerchiefs, alcohols and more. Some of the gifts are really reasonable as they have set the price for children to purchase them easily. Maybe it’s a good idea to get some ties for souvenirs?
