Went to the most famous tourist site in Kyoto, the World Heritage Kiyomizudera!
I was in the most famous temple in Kyoto, Kiyomizudera!
Kiyomizudera was founded in 780 AD and it has been taken an important part through the history. You’ll find Kiyomizudera in a Genji Monogatari either. The buildings were rebuilt many times and still stand shining as a symbolic temple in Kyoto.
How to get to Kiyomizudera from Kyoto St.
Kiyomizudera is not located in the city centre. No train to Kiyomizudera so it’s not that easy to get there. But I understand as they need to preserve their scenery and historical buildings.
From Kyoto station you have to take a bus or Taxi! If you are taking a bus, 206 or 100 are the number of the buses you are getting on. Get off at “Gojozaka” then, walk up the hilly Gojozaka street for about 5 minutes. Then, turn right at Matsubaradori again more 5 minutes up the slope.
The streets are full of tea houses and souvenir shops along!
A bit crowded but take it easy!
Through the gate Niomon then Kiyomizudera
This is the gate Niomon!
Kiyomizudera is the popular destination for students, you’ll see them all the time!
I actually remember myself as a student that we took a group photo there. It’s typical!
After passing Niomon, I was heading to the main hall of the temple.
Arrive at main hall! Kiyomizu Stage
The high light of visiting Kiyomizudera is the stage. It was actually really spacious than I remember!
The mountain was wonderful in the extensive sky.
Looking down at “Otowano taki”, it’s my next destination.
Make a wish at Otowano Taki!
Each waterfall have meanings. From the left “the water of academic achievement” “the water of fulfillment of love” and “the water of longevity and health”. When you drink them, your wish will be granted.
Actually you have to choose only one of them, otherwise your wish won’t come true.
Did you know, there is a god of marriage in Kiyomizudera too!
Just next to the main temple, you’ll find Jisha shrine where a god of marriage lives. If you go there with a couple, you’ll get more close to each other and if you are looking for the one, it’ll help you to find the one. It sounds like a story of Eros (Cupid) from Greek myths.
I wish for my good relationship….
Get a vermillion seal at Kyodo(Sutra library)
Do you know a note book call Goshuinchou? Goshuinshou is the note book that you will collect a vermillion seal from the each temple. The seals are original hand writing or stamps written by the people who work in a temple.
I have my Goshuinchou so I got one for myself too.
What you have to do is just visit Kyodo (Sutra library) and ask for it. (I think you need to pay around ¥300 in general.)
It looks like just a tamp but actually it has more sacred meaning such as “the evidence of your faith”!
Look up Kiyomizu Stage from the bottom
When you look up the stage, you’ll figure how high up the stage is!!
There is an idiomatic expression says “like a feeling of jumping off from Kiyomizu stage” this means you are going to make a once in your life decision. I heard that there are about 200 people who really jump off from there…
The sun started setting down so I left Kiyomizudera.
Dinner at Tofu restaurant “Kiyomizu Junsei Okabeya”
“Okabeya is located on Matsubaradori. Just before the cross road of Gojozaka.
This restaurant serves full course Tofu dish, boiled tofu, sesame tofu, tofu dengaku, tempura and appetizer. All inclusive in ￥2060, it’s really worth it!!
*Tofu hot pot… You’ll boil Tofu by yourself in the soup broth, and then eat with Ponzu dressing.
*Sesame Tofu (the middle square tofu in a bowl)…Sesame taste tofu. It’s sweet and rich. Great with a bit of wasabi
*Tofu Dengaku (the front dish in the wooden box)…It’s a grilled tofu with a miso sauce.
Great location, lovely ambiance and better quality for the price. It was just perfect!!
I really recommend this restaurant, after visiting Kiyomizudera!!
