The “21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa” Near Kenrokuen

In this article, we talk about the “21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa”, located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. This art museum has garnered much praise for its architectual design, and it is an important sight for modern art. The Museum Itselft Is a Work of Art!

This is Ayaka! This time we spent some time in Kanazawa, where now is a cool and hot place, and hung out as well as working. Although Kanazawa is called “small Kyoto” because of the rows of old houses and its traditional sightseeing spots like Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle, it is well maintained and has a very modern vibe as well.

The biggest symbol of the new and stylish Kanazawa the most is this “21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.” They have a collection of modern art.

The most famous museum in Kanazawa

It is walking distance from Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen, so it is a perfect sightseeing spot.

There are many attractions like a Nogaku museum (Japanese traditional dance), a modern literature museum, and a history museum near the 21st Century museum, so the area feels like a cultural mecca.

Of course their displays are amazing, but what is more amazing about this museum is its design. Because they use the wide property to its fullest extent, simply walking on the museum grounds feels great.

The exterior of a building

There is a round shaped white building in the center of a wide lawn. It is a short building that consists of two floors. Because it uses glass and has doors from every angle, it is designed to allow you to view the exhibition from wherever entrance you choose.

Although it is not a huge building, the use of glass in the design gives an amazing sense of freedom.

The designer is an architectual unit called SANAA, made up of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. SANNA earned a great reputation from their work on this 21st Century Museum. As a result, they received the Leone d’Oro award, the highest award from the Venice Biennale at the 9th International Architecture Exhibition. Hmm. I agree with their decision.

Free exhibits

One of the great things about this museum is there are many exhibits you can see for free, even outside the building. Not just things like paintings, but works of art that use the land in bold ways will catch your eye.

"Swimming Pool"

The most famous display from this museum is the “Swimming Pool” by Leandro Erlich. It is displayed all around the year. Audiences can look up at the sky from inside or look down at the inside of the pool from above. These two viewpoints allow audiences to discover various things as they gaze through the pool.

To be honest, we initially thought, “it’s just a pool!” However, as we were looking at the pool reflected by the lights in this space, it felt as if we were going inside the work. You might have to actually visit to experience this feeling??

How was it? We can’t introduce their exhibitions here (lol), but we hope we could deliver some of the charm of the 21st Century Museum! It has a really amazing atmosphere, so please make sure to visit there if you’re around Kanazawa! Even if it’s just for the free exhibitions, it is totally worth it~
