“Kani Doraku” is a restaurant that is specializes in particularly crab dishes. It can be found in Namba, Osaka as well as all over Japan. Today, we’ll introduce Dotonbori’s Naka-store and their “Crab Course.”
Hello! Today I had some drinks with my old friend in Namba, Osaka!
We decided to go a little crazy and eat at a good restaurant since it was a holiday weekend. We chose “Kani Doraku” at Dotonbori Nakaten location. This huge crab display is already a symbol of the Dotonbori area.
Because it was a holiday weekend, there were a lot of people in the Namba area! It was extremely packed. It was so crowded that we were tired after walking just a little bit.
Although the sign at “Kani Doraku” said that it was a 2 hour wait, a spot opened up just as we arrived. They gave us a tatami seat. All the restaurants in the area were super full that night.
We chose the “Kyouzan” course from their “Kani Kaiseki” (Crab Course) menu.
It is an expensive kaiseki that is 8748 yen per person (tax included).
For drinks, we started with beer straight from the tap! Even though it is an expensive restaurant, their drink prices were reasonable. It was 540 yen for a glass of beer.
It’s a crab chopstick stand! It makes you feel like, “This is Kani Doraku”, doesn’t it? Haha.
By the way, they also sell this chopstick stand as a souvenir.
Cheers! It felt so special to have a toast at a nice restaurant, we gulped down our beer.
First, we had “Kani Vinegar”.
It’s simply boiled crab meat, which we depped in vinegar and ate.
There were two varieties of crab: Zuwai and Taraba.
The Taraba Crab meat was filling indeed.
The meat was solid, and crunch when biting down felt great.
The crab vinegar tasted soft and delicious.
The next dish was crab sashimi.
It also had two kinds of crab: Taraba and Zuwai.
You can choose Ponzu or Soy Sauce for your sauce.
I liked Taraba better than Zuwai since it was meatier.
But they both had a sweet taste. I loved both of them.
Then we had Crab Chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg custard).
It was light and simple, my kind of dish.
There was Ankake made of Dashi (Japanese broth) on top, with Yuzu citrus.
And then we had two kinds of Crab Tempura.
Maybe the kitchen was too busy? To be honest, they were too fried.
The Taraba was cooked well though….the over frying was a shame.
Then we had two kinds of broiled crabs.
The crab meat was so sweet!
Both the Zuwai and Taraba were delicious! They smelled great too!
To our surprise, the dinner ended with sushi.
Starting on the left, you can see Crab Roll, Crab Oshizushi (a little sour), Crab Nigiri, and Gunkan. My favorite was the Crab Nigiri.
I could feel the sweetness. Delicious!
Although there’s no picture, I also enjoyed soup with the sushi.
This is the dessert fruit.
I was so full. It was such an amazing Kaiseki!
The two of us had two drinks each, and the bill came to 19,602 yen.
It was 9,801 yen for each person. Although it is definitely extravagant, I thought Kani Doraku still was a great deal in that you can enjoy a high class meal without going over 10,000 yen.
By the way, apparently there was an unfounded rumor that someone was inside the crab display and pedaling a bike to make it move. People in the old days had such silly ideas. Haha.
