A carafe for Japanese sake: Enjoy cold sake while you cool it down!

I’m introducing a stylish but handy carafe that you can drink and cool it at the same time.

There are many overseas visitors wishing to purchase authentic Japanese sake while their visit. If so, it is good to have nice serve ware to enjoy the sake as well.

You can enjoy sake in three ways; have it at a room temperature, cold or warm. It is quite tricky to keep sake cool while drinking. Unlike other liquors like whiskey and Japanese shochu, we don’t really have sake with ice cubes either.

One of the most common sake servers is ‘a sake container/chiller with a big hole on the main body, where ice go in’, but I actually came across a better one on Amazon after a short search. This is good for sake and probably OK for any types of alcohol if you want to have it chilled without ice.

Here it is!

It’s separated into the top and bottom parts. You keep sake at the top, and iced water goes into the bottom one.

The following pictures show how it was wrapped when it arrived.

It was wrapped and packed very carefully due to the nature of thinner glass.

It came with a little leaflet called ‘a guide to the sake server’, which included the instruction and the description of this glassware. This is a ‘how-to’ and ‘how-not to’ guide to keep it sparkly clean, such as ‘never to use an abrasive sponge/steel wool scrubbing brush’ and ‘not to apply too much pressure when washing inside the server’.

The top glass part has a shape like this. It can approximately hold up to 360ml (=2 Go; 1 Go is generally considered as a sake standard measure for one serving).

We can stack the parts together like this.

Then, we can offer sake to a guest, ‘Would you like a cup of sake?’ lifting the chilled bottom part up from the cold ice water and pour your guest a drink.

I put as much ice as it fits. It slightly seems different and it’s kind of nice.

After trying that out, I found that it’s better to chill it with ice and water. Using just ice takes too long to cool sake, and it wasn’t efficient. Apparently, some salt into the water helps it cool down faster. In addition, the water didn’t even drip from the bottom of the top server when I poured the sake, and that is nice and practical.

To tell the truth, I had to return and replace it first when it was new, because of a crack on the server. However, the customer service and response were excellent, and I was very glad that I purchased it. It’s not particularly cheap, but it is very satisfying. The experience of sake at home becomes so stylish when you use this.

So, this summer, I will pull out the sake that I bought for myself as a souvenir, and I will totally enjoy chilled sake in this stylish server!
