Goryokaku

Goryokaku is a star shaped fort/castle in Hakodate, Hokkaido. The fort was built during the last civil war called "Boshin Senso." The war occured during the transition from the Edo period to Meiji (popularly known as the Meiji Restoration). Goryokaku is well known for being the last battlefield of Boshin Senso. There are some walls remaining on the site, and you can see its star shape from the top of Goryokaku Tower which is located on the site. Sakura (cherry blossoms) trees are planted throughout the site, so you can see the fort surrounded by beautifully bloomed Sakura in the spring. Additionally, lights illuminate the walls and towers in the winter.
