Kumano Kodo

Kumano Kobo is an ancient route for pilgrims that is crisscrossing Kiiji, Kohechi, and other places along the Kii Peninsula. It's been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title, "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." Pilgrims believe walking to the shrines through thickly forested mountains purifies the soul and shepherds them to the Pure Land alive. It takes a month or more to hike around and visit all shrines, so most pilgrims make accommodation arrangements, but some choose to camp along the way.
