January in Japan is the coldest season of the year. The temperature goes down to 5-10℃, or even below 0℃ in rural areas. The 1st to 3rd of January are treated as Japanese holidays so most of the local shops/restaurants are closed. Seijin No Hi is another holiday on 15th of January to celebrate young adults turning 20 years old. Also, the 17th of January is the unforgettable anniversary of the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake. It has been 20 years since the tragedy happened, and you will be surprised how amazingly the region has recovered!
